We decided months ago before we arrived in Florida that we wanted to see manatees, whatever it takes, wherever that would take us. We’ve never seen one even in captivity, much less in the wild. So we booked a site at a charming RV campground called Nature’s Resort, near Homosassa Springs Wildlife Refuge and Crystal River Wildlife Refuge, two places that are considered the best places to see manatees. We arrived in early December.

Welcome to colorful Colorado! In early October, we passed through southwestern Colorado all too briefly on our way between Arizona and Moab, Utah. We took a day to drive the scenic route into the Rockies between Durango, Silverton, and Ouray (pronounced “your-RAY”), Colorado.

Whether you’re buying an RV, or just curious about them, buyers have an important decision to make right off the bat. New or used?

“Don’t buy a new RV,” they say, “because it will depreciate 25 to 30% the first year!”

“Don’t buy a used RV,” they say, “because it won’t be under warranty and so many things need service and repair.”

“Don’t buy a new RV,” they say, “because so many things go wrong with motorhomes the first six to twelve months.”

“Buy a new RV,” they say, so you can get exactly what you want custom from the factory.”

We’ve had an amazing start to our full-time RV adventure so far — dropping off the kids at college, having to be towed after a breakdown on the side of the interstate in Kentucky on day 5, visiting friends, family, and National Parks in Utah and Nevada (as described in my last blog post), and generally finding an adventure every day.

Oasis RV Resort Las Vegas

The Oasis RV Resort in Las Vegas…rows of palm trees, an oasis-like pool complex, and 85F at night makes this one of the most beautiful RV parks we’ve seen so far.

This week continued our amazing RV adventure, including possibly the most interesting and fun 24-hour period ever!

Rig tow truck

The time of our lives…? Not exactly when on Aug. 19, when our rig broke down on I-25 outside Paducah, Kentucky and had to be towed.

After packing up everything and heading south, we made our goal of dropping off my son at Clemson University for his freshman year in two days. The RV, however, had other ideas about our plan to meet Mitch’s son in Salt Lake City.
